HPGA 405 - Witchcraft, Demonology, and the Supernatural 3 Credits Why did large-scale witch hunts emerge in early modern European societies, and why did such hunts eventually fade out? This course explores the history of the supernatural, witchcraft, and demonology in Europe and its colonies from antiquity through the late 1700s. The main topics include the origins of European ideas and practices related to the supernatural and how those concepts changed through the Middle Ages and Renaissance. This course also explores historical methodology, interpretation, and scholarship application about witchcraft, demonology, and the supernatural.
