CRIM 407 - Penology 3 Credits This course will trace the history and philosophy of the penitentiary movement in the United States and Europe. Central to this concern will be an examination of the social, political, and economic changes which occurred in 18th and 19th Century America that led to the rise of the modern penitentiary. Classic and contemporary theory in penology will be examined with an emphasis on the policy implications of the various theoretical orientations. A critical approach will be used to suggest the future of imprisonment in America as a means of social control. Prerequisite: CRIM 101 , CRIM 264 .
